What is a STEMI?

A STEMI (ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction) is a deadly type of heart attack, which is identified on an EKG. Early treatment to the blocked coronary artery minimizes the extent of the heart muscle damage and preserves the pumping function of the heart, thereby, increasing survival and reducing or eliminating complications.

STEMI Time Calculation

Average STEMI times are approximate and are provided for informational purposes only.  STEMI Times represent an average of our hospital’s STEMI cases over the past 52 weeks for which data is available, and is defined as the time it took to reestablish blood flow from the time the patient arrived at the hospital’s Emergency Room.  The American College of Cardiology, the American Heart Association and the Joint Commission have established that this should occur in 90 minutes or less.

Our average STEMI time 54 minutes, which is lower than the national benchmark of 90 minutes.

D2B (Door-to-Balloon)

D2B: An Alliance for Quality is a new Guidelines Applied in Practice (GAP) program launched by the American College of Cardiology (ACC) to save time and save lives by reducing the door-to-balloon times in U.S. hospitals by opening vessels or blockages. National ACC/AHA guidelines state that hospitals treating acute heart attack patients by bringing the patients to the catheterization laboratory and relieving the block artery should readily achieve a door-to-balloon time of 90 minutes or less, and studies have demonstrated strong associations between time to primary Percutaneous Coronary Interventions (PCI) and in-hospital mortality risk. Time is truly muscle. Therefore, we have an aggressive Cardiac Alert Program that involves the efforts of highly skilled team of physicians, nurses, and technologists that provide 24 hours 7 days a week emergency cardiac care.

Kendall Regional Medical Center is participating in this effort along with the American Heart Association (AHA) and the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute. The D2B Alliance was developed to make what is current extraordinary performance ordinary by providing hospitals with key evidence-based strategies and supporting tools needed to begin reducing their D2B times. Also, Kendall Regional Medical Center is part of the Miami-Dade County Fire Rescue STEMI Network.
