About our Emergency Department

In the ED our goal is to provide quality, compassionate care without any unnecessary delays. Our emergency department offers emergency medical services provided by a team of physicians, nurse practitioners, pediatricians, nurses and other support personnel. The ED is staffed 24 hours a day with physicians and nurses. Specialists are also available 24 hours a day.

Kidsville at Kendall Regional Medical Center provides 24 hour pediatric emergency medical care in a kid-friendly environment.

When You First Arrive

When you first arrive in the ED, please "sign in" as soon as possible. After you arrive you will be seen by the "triage" nurse (he/she will find out why you came to the ED and the severity of your problem). Please have ready a list of any medications which you may be taking or allergies, and the name of your doctor.
Many of our patients arrive by ambulance and we must see patients based on the severity of their problems, not the time they arrive in the ED. We will do everything possible to minimize the amount of time you must wait. While you are waiting the Triage nurse will periodically monitor your condition and vital signs. He/She may initiate some of the tests the physician may order to reach a diagnosis. Waiting time can run from 0 minutes to 6 hours depending on severity of your condition.
After you have been seen by the nurse and possibly the physician you will be asked for information by the Registration staff. Your medical care will not be delayed by this process. If you have been seen in our ED before, much of the information will be in the computer, but please let the staff know if anything has changed.

The Examination

Once you are in the Exam Room you will he assigned to a nurse who will complete an assessment and prepare you for the doctor's exam. The doctor may not see you immediately because he may be caring for a critically ill patient. However, we will do our best not to have you wait too long. If you have any questions your nurse or a patient representative will be glad to answer them. Your family will be allowed to visit with you while you are waiting. Once in your room, our visitor's policy allows for one visitor per patient, unless otherwise determined by the charge nurse.

Special Test

The doctor may order lab tests, X-rays or other tests to assist in determining how to best help you. These tests may increase the length of your ED visit. You will be kept informed about what is being done by your nurse or doctor. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask. The ED physician will consult with your doctor at the end of the evaluation.

Possible Dispositions

1) Discharge after treatment is completed. We will supply you with written and verbal discharge instructions (and prescriptions if indicated) before you leave the hospital.

2) Admission to the hospital and transfer to your room. This requires orders from your admitting physician (NOT the ED physician), the availability of a room and communication from the emergency department nurse to the floor nurse. Your patience in this situation is greatly appreciated.

3) Transfer to another facility. In the event that your insurance company or physician requests a transfer or if you should require a service not provided by our facility, arrangements will be made as expeditiously as possible.

Family and Friends of ED Patients

We appreciate your concern about your family member or friend who is a patient in our ED: We will inform you of any progress being made in the evaluation, as well as any change in the patient's condition. Please keep in mind that the patient's care is our highest priority. When visitors are allowed in the treatment area, we ask you to assist us by respecting the following guidelines:

• Please remain in the patient's assigned cubicle or you will be asked to return to the waiting area This is for you own safety and to facilitate the flow of traffic in the ED.
• Please be considerate of other patients by keeping your voice down and respecting their privacy and confidentiality.
• Small children and infants must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
• Please be understanding if you are asked to leave the treatment area during examinations, procedures or other relevant studies. This is to ensure the patient's privacy but may also occur as a result of the limited space available in each cubicle.
